New Passport Regulations

(Message from the Swedish Honorary Consulate)

New rules for applying for a Swedish passport and national id-cards

- As of January 1, 2008 all applications must be submitted in person at the Consulate General of Sweden in Los Angeles, New York or Washington D.C. This is a result of the new biometric passport standards which require specific photo stations.

These changes are part of the worldwide effort to increase the security standards. If you are applying for a regular Swedish passport or a Swedish national id-card and live in the Seattle area, the closest mission with a photo station will be the Consulate General of Sweden in Los Angeles. This means the honorary consulates will no longer accept regular passport or national id-card applications.

Passports and national id-cards can still be picked up at honorary consulates however, but only until Sweden begins to use digital fingerprints in travel documents. This is expected to take place during 2008.

If you need an emergency passport the Honorary Consulates can still continue to receive applications for such passports for rush processing at the Consulate General of Sweden in Los Angeles.

Last day to apply for a regular Swedish passport or national id-card at the Swedish Honorary Consulate in Seattle is Thursday December 20th 2007.
